You can still enjoy jetting off on your trip by using our handy guide, we’ve got essential tips and activities to keep you and your toddler entertained for the whole flight.

Preparing for the Flight

Start early, before you even get to the airport the preparations begin. Consider these points:

  • Book a suitable flight time: Consider your child's usual naptime and daily routine when booking your flight. If possible, choose a flight time that aligns with their naptime, increasing the chances of them sleeping during the flight.
  • Reserve a child-friendly seat: The more space the better, try and nab an aisle seat so you aren’t saying “excuse me” every 5 minutes when your little one needs to walk down the cabin aisle for the 8th time. Also seats near the toilets are a good choice, you might get more legroom and it’s easier for swift nappy changes.
  • Plan for airport security: Familiarize yourself with airport security regulations regarding liquids, medications, and other items specific to toddlers. For example, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows exceptions for infant and toddler beverages, as well as medications.
  • Practice good airport etiquette: Start talking about and role-playing things that happen in airports. Explaining the importance of waiting in a queue and the need to not wander off. You could play games with tickets and pretend passport control. Check out this book about airports.

Keeping your toddler entertained during the flight is crucial for a smooth journey. Here are some airplane activities to consider:

  • Colouring and drawing: Bring non-messy colouring and drawing items such as Crayola's Colour Wonder Mess-Free Colouring sets or a mini watercolour book. These can keep your child engaged for a significant amount of time.

During the Flight

Once you're on the plane, it's essential to follow some practical strategies to ensure a smooth and enjoyable flight for both you and your toddler:

  • Establish a routine: Routine is always a winner with children, if it’s normally lunchtime when you’re flying then be prepared and have some of their favourite food with you. This will help them feel at ease and more comfortable during the flight and the journey in general.
  • Encourage napping: If your child usually takes a nap around the time of your flight, encourage them to sleep by creating a comfortable environment with their favourite blanket or lovey.
  • Offer distractions: When your child starts to become restless, offer various distractions, such as toys, games, or electronic entertainment.
  • Stay calm and patient: Your child will likely pick up on your emotions, so it's essential to remain calm and patient during the flight. Remember that other passengers understand that traveling with a toddler can be challenging, and most will be sympathetic.

These tips should help you get through the flight relatively unscathed. Your 2-year-old will enjoy themselves much more if you’ve prepared things to make their journey more enjoyable. Preparation is key, plan ahead and pack accordingly. You’ll get off to a great start of your holiday, then you can start to plan for the flight home.
